Mixtape: Grief & Remembrance
October 20th - 26th - This week's Mixtape
This week’s theme hits close to home. These are the songs I wove into the memorial video I created for my father-in-law — a tribute to his life, his humour, and the memories that will always stay with us.
Each track carries a piece of reflection, nostalgia, and quiet courage — the soundtrack of loss, love, and the process of honouring someone who shaped our world. Listen, feel, remember, and maybe find a little perspective in the music that helped me say goodbye.
Grief — The Soundtrack of Goodbye
Grief has a strange way of tuning your heart — sometimes to silence, sometimes to music. When I created a memorial video as a tribute to my father-in-law, I wanted it to sound like him. Full of spirit, stories, and those classic songs that made everyone tap their foot, raise a glass, or get just a little misty-eyed.
I edited just snippets of the songs mentioned below to capture the moments of his life.
These are the songs that played as his story unfolded:
🎶 “Let It Be” — featuring Sheridan Brass, Elisa Astrid, and Music Travel Love. A song of release and peace. It set the tone perfectly — a gentle reminder to let go, trust, and carry on.
🏔️ “Mountain Music” by Alabama — for his love of the outdoors, and those easy, blue-sky moments that reminded us to slow down and sing along.
👴 “Grandpa (Tell Me ’Bout the Good Ol’ Days)” by The Judds — because he was that grandpa. The one with stories, lessons, and that old-school wisdom you don’t find much anymore.
🎤 “I Did It My Way” by Elvis — his anthem. No one who knew him would argue that he lived life on his own terms — and wouldn’t have it any other way.
🍺 “I Like Beer” by Tom T. Hall — because you can’t pay tribute to him without raising a glass (or two) in his honour. Also, my husband really wanted to include that song as a nod to Pops Comic Relief, Cold Beer, and Cottage Wisdom… A song that made everyone smile through their tears.
Each track brought a little bit of him back to life for a few minutes — the laughter, the stubborn streak, the love of family, the good times. Together, they became more than just a playlist; they became a farewell mixtape — a reminder that even in grief, music can help us remember, heal, and smile through the ache.
So grab your headphones (and maybe a tissue) and press play. This one’s for the ones we miss — and the songs that help us keep them close. 💿💔
